There’s nothing like a family stroll on a Sunday morning on a perfectly sunny winters day; and it’s even better when you’re lucky enough to be able to walk around this little bit of paradise…just a 30 minute drive from my house.
Unfortunately I’ve spent a good amount of my time at home being sick. In fact, this week I was laid up in bed pretty much all week. Come Sunday I was on the up, feeling better and desperate to get out of the house. Lucky for me it was a scorcher of a winters day…I mean, it was’t quite bikini weather but I definitely left the house with one or two too many layers on.
I don’t know whether it was the sun, fresh air, the smell of the sea or the fact I had been cooped up in bed for the past week, but we decided to turn our beach stroll into a solid trek/climb up the hill.
It was tough going but the views at the top were worth it to say the least.
From the top of the ridge, on one side you could see across to the South Island and in the other direction you could see all the way up to Kapati Island on the west coast of the North Island.
If I wasn’t out of breath enough already, we decided to continue onwards and upwards towards the old gun emplacements and windmill park.
Although I haven’t felt so out of shape in a long time, the views were still amazing.
My Dad used to bring me up here when I was little and we would run around and play in the old lookouts. Although some of them are closed off now, it was still cool to be able to go back and explore my old playground.
It was a perfect winter’s day and the perfect day out with family.
I feel pretty lucky this is all right in my backyard.
Love,
Wilbs
